چکیده

Introduction: Power amplifiers are a key building block in any radio transceiver, usually necessitating a multi-chip module solution owing to the requirement of a specialised process with high voltage breakdown and low-loss passive components. Several researches have demonstrated that CMOS technology is a viable option for implementation of the power amplifier. Fully integrated transformer based power combining has been demonstrated by [1], utilising so-called ‘slab’ inductors to realise highly efficient on-chip magnetic coupling structures called the DAT. In this Letter we propose a classic transformer based power combiner, shown in Fig. 1. Each pair of windings are realised with ring based transformer structures that are simple to design and scale with frequency. Since each stage is DC isolated, each amplifier runs on a low supply voltage, allowing low breakdown transistors to be employed. An additional benefit of the ring based structure is simple power control. Since each stage operates independently, we can turn off amplifier stages to back-off power without dramatically altering the efficiency of the power combiner [2].

Integrated circuit transmission-line transformer power combiner for millimetre-wave applications

A new approach for power combining several low-voltage CMOS amplifiers using a new on-chip transmission line transformer structure is presented. The power combiner utilises the interconnection of short sections of integrated differential lines and has an efficiency independent of the transformation ratio. Full-wave electromagnetic simulation confirms the operation and low insertion loss of the ...

Study of the Inter-stage Capacitor Effects of a Rf Cmos Power Amplifier to Enhance Its Efficiency

In this work, we analyze the effects of an inter-stage capacitor located between the power stage input and the driver stage output on the overall efficiency of a RF CMOS power amplifier and on gate-drain reliability problems. To verify the analyzed effects, we designed a RF CMOS power amplifier with a center frequency of 1.85GHz. Class-D amplifiers with a feedback resistor are used as driver st...

A Brief Review: Stage-Convertible Power Amplifier Using Differential Line Inductor

In this review article, a stage-convertible RF power amplifier designed with a 0.18-m RF CMOS process is described. A method to implement a low-power matching network is an essential technology for the stage-convertible power amplifier. Various low-power matching networks with distributed active transformers as an output power combiner are compared in terms of the amounts of undesired coupling...

A Transformer Noise-Canceling Ultra-Wideband CMOS Low-Noise Amplifier

Previously reported wideband CMOS low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) have difficulty in achieving both wideband input impedance matching and low noise performance at low power consumption and low supply voltage. We present a transformer noise-canceling wideband CMOS LNA based on a common-gate topology. The transformer, composed of the input and shunt-peaking inductors, partly cancels the noise origina...

Broadband millimetre-wave passive spatial combiner based on coaxial waveguide

A broadband millimetre-wave passive spatial combiner using a microstrip probe array and an oversized coaxial waveguide is successfully designed and tested. The equivalent circuit approach of transverse electromagnetic (TEM) lines is adopted to synthesise the coaxial stepped impedance transformer from a K connector with the oversized coaxial waveguide and to analyse the microstrip probe array. T...
